Early Gold Crowns:
The first crown coin, known as the “Crown of the Double Rose,” was introduced in 1526 during Henry VIII’s reign and initially valued at four shillings and sixpence, later changed to five shillings. These early crowns were minted in 22 carat gold.
Introduction of Silver Crowns:
Silver crowns were first introduced in 1551 during the reign of Edward VI. These coins, also valued at five shillings, were made of sterling silver, a durable alloy known for its resistance to clipping, a practice where counterfeiters would shave off the edges of coins.
Milled Edges and Further Development:
The introduction of milled edges on coins, where the edge was decorated with ridges, further discouraged clipping. The silver crown continued to be minted after the gold crown was discontinued following the reign of Charles II.
Commemorative Crowns:
In more recent times, the crown has primarily been issued as a commemorative coin to mark significant royal events like coronations, jubilees, and weddings.
Modern Crowns:
While crowns are no longer regularly used as circulating currency, they continue to be minted as commemorative pieces.
